On August 1, 2009, Luis and Carolina officially launched the
fundraising efforts of The Walkabout Foundation. In order to maintain a coherent approach with the very essence of the foundation,
the opening act was not the traditional gala, benefit or auction, but a grueling and symbolic 800 kilometer walk along the
historical pilgrims' route of the Camino of Santiago of Compostela. Luis and Carolina traversed a route (click on underlined word for visual map) longer than the whole
of Florida and almost as long as the whole of Great Britain over the course of 32 days. Their journey began by walking 485
kilometers along the Northern Way (Camino Norte) of the Camino of Santiago. Upon reaching the Spanish medieval town of Oviedo,
they followed the Original Way (Camino Primitivo) for the last 307 kilometers of the journey.
Over mountains, through
forests, and around lakes, the long walk was a test of courage and determination, challenging both their endurance and mental
and physical strength. For additional
